About Me - Helen Muniappa
Hello, I’m Helen Muniappa, a qualified and experienced Person-Centred counsellor based in Nottingham. I offer a warm, supportive space for people navigating anxiety, stress, postnatal depression and more. My approach is grounded in empathy, respect and trust, and I’m committed to helping you feel heard, safe, and understood.

My Counselling Journey
I began my counselling journey in 2018, following several years of study and voluntary work. While training, I worked with Counselling Xtra, a Nottingham-based charity supporting people with a range of emotional difficulties including anxiety, depression, family conflict and relationship issues. That experience shaped the compassionate, client-led approach I bring into my practice today. I believe every person’s story matters, and counselling should be a space where you feel genuinely listened to.
I now work with individuals and couples, offering a calm, confidential environment where we explore what’s going on for you at your pace. I’m passionate about helping people feel more connected to themselves, and I consider it a privilege to walk alongside you as you navigate whatever challenges you’re facing. Whether you’re looking for short-term support or longer-term exploration, I aim to offer a space that feels respectful, safe, and centred entirely around your needs.

Qualifications and Professional Standards
I hold a CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and am an Accredited Member of the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). I’ve also completed a number of specialist trainings, including an Accredited Certificate in Couples Counselling and a Certificate in Online and Telephone Counselling (approved by ACTO and NCPS). I'm on the Approved Therapist List at Nottingham University and hold the BACP Certificate of Proficiency.
I work in line with an ethical framework for good practice, and I’m fully insured and DBS-checked. My practice is underpinned by regular supervision and continued professional development, which helps me offer the most up-to-date, thoughtful support to everyone I work with. You can find out more about my accrediting body at www.nationalcounsellingsociety.org. For me, being a counsellor isn’t just a job—it’s a vocation, and I’m committed to offering the best care I can.
My Approach and Values
As a Person-Centred counsellor, I believe that you are the expert on your own life. My role is not to give advice or tell you what to do, but to walk alongside you with empathy, honesty, and acceptance. I offer a space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings without fear of judgement. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, postnatal depression or relationship issues, I’ll support you in finding your own way forward.
I also value inclusivity and welcome clients from all backgrounds, cultures, and identities. My aim is always to create a therapeutic relationship built on trust and genuine connection. I know that starting counselling can feel daunting, but you don’t have to go through things alone. If you’re looking for someone who will truly listen and meet you with warmth and respect, contact me today.
Frequently Asked Questions
Some questions raised by my clients over time.
Our first session, like all other sessions will be for 60 minutes, and will include our ‘counselling agreement’. Our first session is to talk about what is going on for you, to enable understanding of the issues you wish to explore and what you hope to gain from counselling. In this time you can consider whether you feel comfortable with me as your counsellor, and whether my way of working feels right for you, because finding a counsellor you feel comfortable with is important to the therapeutic relationship.
Yes it is. What you talk about will remain between the two of us. There are exceptions to this, which will be discussed with you in the first session. But in most circumstances, what you talk about will remain within the confines and professional boundaries of our therapeutic relationship.
I do require 24 hours notice if you cannot make it to your session, otherwise you will be charged for the full session. If I have to cancel, I will ensure another session is booked on a day and time agreed by us both, at no extra cost to you.
People may change at different paces. Therapy can last anywhere from one session, to several months or even years. It depends on what your needs are. The process proceeds at your pace, in my experience therapy works best when you are ready and committed to making yourself and your needs a priority.
